Honda Unveils Next-Gen Accord Coupe in Detroit

2011 was a tough year for many Asian automakers, and Honda was no exception. With vehicles and parts in short supply due to the natural disasters that struck Japan and Thailand, the automaker struggled to keep up with demand last year. But Honda wants critics and consumers to know that they're ready for 2012, and they're certainly not backing down. And they started the year off in a big way with the 2012 Honda Accord Coupe Concept at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

John Mendel, Honda America's Executive VP of Sales, unveiled the new Coupe Concept, and announced to the crowd, "We're here to serve notice to the competing that Honda is again firing on all four cylinders."1 He went on to say that this year, Honda plans to sell 300,000 Accords, and with its aggressive new styling and improved fuel-economy and power, "the new, ninth-generation Accord will raise the bar again."2

You'll notice many sophisticated changes to the styling and design, but the major change for 2013 comes in the shape of the powertrain. The all-new Earth Dreams 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engine can be mated to a CVT or six-speed manual transmission, and delivers an impressive 181 horsepower. Official numbers haven't been released yet, but you can expect class-leading fuel economy from this impressively designed coupe.

Of course, some things will remain the same in the new Accord. Generous cabin space is one thing that will remain the same. And the safety features you've come to expect from Honda? Expect all of that and more in 2013, including a Lane Departure Warning and Forward Crash Warning, just to name a few.
