4 Signs Your Car’s Air Conditioner Needs Service

Whether you’re on a family road trip or your daily commute, your car’s AC should keep you cool and comfortable all through the hot, humid Kansas summer. Here are 4 signs your vehicle’s air conditioner needs to be serviced:

1. Air isn’t as cold as it used to be – Your car’s refrigerant may need to be topped off or recharged.

2. Foul smell like mildew coming from the AC vents – This could be an indication of mold in the system.

3. Unusual banging or rattling sounds – The condenser or fan belt could be worn out, or debris could be clogging the fan.

4. Puddles or stains from water on your car’s floorboard under the dash – Your car could have a clogged drain hose.

What’s involved in a car air conditioner service check?

An A/C service check will test the system for leaks and make sure it has the recommended level of refrigerant. Cars used to use Freon as a refrigerant, but it’s no longer allowed to be made in the U.S., so modern cars use R-134 instead.

Most vehicles don’t need refrigerant to be added more than every few years unless there’s a leak somewhere in the system. Once your AC has been topped off, your car should provide icy cold air for several seasons. If the air conditioner starts putting out warmer air again, that’s a sign of a leak, and you’ll need to have the system checked thoroughly to find and repair it.

Note: Adding more refrigerant yourself at home isn’t recommended, because there’s no way of knowing how full the AC system is without the proper gauges.

If any problems are found, such as leaks, mold, or worn parts, you will be given the available options for repair or replacement. If your car’s air conditioner has mold inside, it’s usually on the evaporator core, which circulates the refrigerant through the system. There’s a treatment available to auto dealerships that will get rid of the mold.
