Tips for Traveling by Car with Pets

Are you thinking about taking your fur baby on vacation with you? If a road trip with a pet is in your summer plans, here are a few helpful things to consider that can make the trip more enjoyable for both you AND your furry friend.

Before You Go:

  • Get your pet checked by a vet; have the vet complete a health certificate
  • Apply flea and tick treatment to your dog or cat
  • If you’ll be staying in a hotel, check their pet policy for fees and restrictions on size or breed

What to Pack:

  • Current vaccination records and the signed health certificate.
  • Your pet’s medications (bring more than you think your pet will need)
  • Have your pet wear ID tags with both your home and destination addresses
  • Collar or harness with leash
  • Bed or blanket to lay on in the car
  • Crate or kennel
  • A few favorite toys
  • Food and dish
  • Bottle or jug of water and bowl
  • Plastic bags to pick up after your pet during restroom breaks

While on the Road:

  • Plan to stop every 2-3 hours to give your pet a chance to go to the bathroom and exercise
  • When you stop for breaks, remember the hot asphalt can burn your pet’s paws, so walk him or her in the grass or dirt
  • Use the bowl and bottled water to give your pet a drink whenever you stop
  • Try to limit your pet’s outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day
  • Don’t leave your pet alone in the car, even for a few minutes. Temperatures can quickly reach dangerous levels, or your pet could get stolen

When planning your trip, you can find a list of pet-friendly attractions, restaurants, events, and accommodations at
