Scholfield East Service Foreman Named One of the Top Techs in the U.S.

Industry expert and Honda Enthusiast “HondaPro Jason” visited our dealership in April. Jason spent time interviewing some of our staff about what it’s like to work here. Our east service center shop foreman, Ryan Smith, shared his experience working his way up through the ranks to becoming one of the top Honda technicians in the United States.

More than 20 Years of Experience

Ryan joined Scholfield Honda straight out of tech school in 1995. He started off as a technician, doing the basics around the shop. As he states, he proved his work and worked his way up, “like anyone should.” In the last 20+ years, Ryan has seen the Scholfield lot expand to three or four times the size it was when he started, and Honda vehicles have introduced an incredible amount of technology. Staying current on all vehicle models, not just Hondas, is a challenge that Ryan relishes.

The Service Process

When a car comes in to the shop, a service advisor writes up a referral and then Ryan, the shop foreman, dispatches it to the proper technician. He follows up to make sure job is completed properly, and also works on vehicles himself. Including Ryan, Scholfield East Service Center has six ASE Master Technicians – that’s half the techs in the shop!

Award-Winning Skills

In November of 2015, Ryan put his Honda repair and diagnostic skills to the test at the American Honda Zone TOPTECH Hands-On Skills Challenge zone competition in Denver. Ryan completed a hands-on diagnostic test and finished first out of 21 technicians. He became one of 11 techs who went to California for nationals. We’re pleased to report that Ryan finished 4th in the country out of over 12,000 technicians! Each entrant completed a hands-on diagnostic test on a brand new Honda Pilot. Ryan says his goal is to go back and finish first in the nation, and we’d love to see him do it!

Looking Toward the Future

While Ryan waits for the next Honda technician skills challenge, he says he’s excited for Scholfield Honda’s new building and having all service staff under the same roof. He’s looking forward to giving employees a bigger opportunity and helping them grow. Ryan states his attitude of caring about the success of his staff is modeled after encouragement shown by Roger Scholfield and the rest of the management team.
