Where are Hondas Made? Right Here in the USA

When you think of Honda, what country comes to mind? For most, there’s no doubt that Honda is a classic Japanese automaker. Historically, Honda’s roots are in Japan. However, a lot has changed in the world since the American Honda Motor Company was established in 1959. Globalization has made the worldwide economy far less insular, and the automaker is much more American than you may realize.

Now, the Honda produces many of its automobiles, engines, transmissions, and components for American and global consumers right here in the U.S. In fact, since 1982, Honda has built over 26.1 million automobiles in the U.S.

Honda: Made in the USA

Are you curious about how productive Honda’s U.S. operations are? Maybe you’re wondering how purchasing a new Honda helps benefit the U.S. economy. In this article, we’ll show you how.

Honda’s History in America

Honda first entered the U.S. market by selling motorcycles in the 1960’s. As other Japanese automakers began expanding overseas in the 1970’s, Honda brought its N600 sedan to the U.S. Eventually, Honda continued to expand its U.S. footprint, and the Civic and Accord were eventually named best selling vehicles in 1990. Since, Honda has continued to expand its reach across the U.S., and in 2018, Honda sold 1.604 million units.

Exploring Honda’s U.S. Footprint

In the 1979, Honda became the first Japanese automaker to begin manufacturing automobiles in the U.S. Now, Honda operates 12 manufacturing plants in six states: Ohio, Alabama, Indiana, South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia. These U.S.-based facilities manufacture and assemble automobiles under the Honda and Acura nameplates. In addition, these facilities are responsible for manufacturing Honda engines, transmissions and other components.

Honda’s most recent manufacturing plant opened in 2016. This plant manufactures the Acura NSX, which is currently the only supercar built in the U.S. Combined, these plants are responsible for producing 2/3 of all Honda and Acura-branded vehicles worldwide.

Honda’s aircraft division also operates out of the U.S., producing aircraft and aircraft engines. Headquartered in North Carolina, Honda’s aircraft division produced 37 aircraft and 75 aircraft engines in 2018. Honda also produces power equipment and powersports products as part of its U.S. operations. Last year, these facilities manufactured 535,000 power equipment products and 123,000 power sports products.

American Hondas on a Global Scale

Not only does Honda manufacture products to be sold in the U.S., but it exports many American-made products overseas as well. In 1987, Honda became the first Japanese automaker to build and export from the U.S. to overseas markets. Since, Honda has exported 1.3 million automobiles. Honda also manufactures engines, transmissions and components for global sale. For example, Honda manufactures its 10-speed automatic transmissions in Georgia, then exports them to be installed in Japanese-manufactured Hondas.

Employing Americans

Honda’s U.S. presence directly supplies spending power to approximately 31,000 associates on its payroll, 29,500 of which work directly for Honda. In 2018, Honda set an all-time company record with a payroll topping $2.5 billion. 75% of Honda’s U.S.-based jobs are in manufacturing, while 25% are in sales, finance and research and development. In addition to direct employees, Honda automobile, powersports and power equipment dealerships employ roughly 159,000 Americans. Combining Honda’s direct and indirect employment, the company makes a significant investment in the U.S. economy by improving and maintaining its American operations.
